Clear a classic minefield with first-click safety, three levels, flags, and a timer.

Mapping the minefield

Rules

  1. Reveal every square that does not contain a mine.
  2. A number shows how many mines touch that square, including diagonally.
  3. Flag squares you believe contain mines. Flags are optional and do not end the game.
  4. Revealing a mine ends the board.
  5. The first selected square and all of its neighboring squares are guaranteed to be safe.

Difficulty levels

  • Beginner: 9×9 board with 10 mines.
  • Intermediate: 16×16 board with 40 mines.
  • Hard: 16×30 board with 99 mines.

Controls

On desktop, left-click to reveal a square and right-click to place or remove a flag. On touch screens, select Reveal or Flag before choosing a square. The timer begins with the first reveal.

A brief history

Mine-finding computer puzzles appeared in several forms before Microsoft's version. Microsoft Minesweeper was released with the Entertainment Pack and became widely known when it shipped with Windows 3.1 in 1992.
